We have all put off kitchen and bath repairs to avoid added expenses and time consuming repairs. There are, however, certain home repairs that should require a sense of urgency. These are the issues you should never put off until later.

Check out our list of Kitchen and Bath Repairs You Should Never Avoid.

Leaky Faucet and Running Toilet

Most of us have had to deal with a leaky faucet or running toilet at one time or another. While these home repairs may be common, they should not be ignored for very long. Sure it’s not as serious as water pouring from your ceiling, but a faucet with a slow leak or a constantly running toilet require immediate action. Not only are these leaks annoying, they are wasteful and could be contributing to your rising water bill.

Peeling Caulk and Crumbling Grout

Caulk seals joints and cracks (like those around your bathtub) so that water cannot get in. Grout on the other hand bonds elements, such as tile, together and also serves the purpose of keeping water out. Having to re-caulk and re-grout around the house comes with the territory of being a homeowner, it’s just something you occasionally have to do. If you’ve noticed your grout is crumbling and caulk is peeling away, you shouldn’t put off this repair too long as hidden water can build up in the wrong places.

Natural Gas Leak

Gas leaks are a common but extremely dangerous occurrence that should be resolved immediately. According to the Public Utilities Commision of Ohio (PUCO), “The chemical properties of natural gas make it a clean fuel source. However, those same properties make it potentially dangerous for consumers if their natural gas appliances are not properly maintained. One of the dangers of poorly maintained or improperly used appliances is carbon monoxide poisoning. If a faulty furnace does not burn natural gas properly, or is not vented properly, carbon monoxide can begin to build in the home.” A rare yet even more dangerous concern is a gas line leak. If you detect a strong odor of gas, PUCO recommends these vital tips:

  • Do not attempt to locate the leak.

  • Do not turn any electrical appliances on or off.

  • Do not smoke or use any open flames.

  • Leave the house and, from a safe distance, call the utility company and 9-1-1.

Mold and Mildew

Mold, mildew, and fungus are usually the result of water damage and moisture issues within the home. Not only are these growth problems unsightly, they can pose a serious threat to the health of you and your family members. Don’t let a mold or mildew contamination get out of control and take on a life of its own, causing property damage to your home. While there are do-it-yourself solutions for tackling mold growth, you may want to consider bringing in a professional who can accurately identify what type of mold you are dealing with and how to get rid of it for good.

It can be hard enough to keep your home clean and organized, so when it comes time to take care of home repairs, we understand why some people put these things off. If you need to tackle a list of home repairs, prioritize the most serious repairs and get professional help to ensure they are fixed properly. As far as more simple tasks like re-caulking, this is something most people could do themselves in no time at all. Take care of these annoying issues and you will sleep better, and more safely, at night!
