Childhood Cancer Awareness Month

September is National Childhood Cancer Awareness Month, a time when people come together to raise awareness and recognize the children affected by cancer. According to the American Childhood Cancer Organization, “Families, caregivers, charities and research groups across the United States observe September as Childhood Cancer Awareness Month. In the U.S., 15,780 children under the age of 21 are diagnosed with cancer every year; approximately 1/4 of them will not survive the disease. A diagnosis turns the lives of the entire family upside down. The objective of Childhood Cancer Awareness Month is to put a spotlight on the types of cancer that largely affect children, survivorship issues, and – importantly – to help raise funds for research and family support.”

Flashes of Hope, a volunteer driven organization solely focused on children’s cancer, states, “Pediatric cancer research is severely underfunded.” Childhood cancer research receives only 4% of U.S. federal funding and nearly 0% of that funding is allotted for children’s cancer research and development in the pharmaceutical industry.

This cause is close to our hearts as it has directly affected MBS Interiors Kitchen and Bath Designer, Michael Bish and his family. Spurred by their life-changing, personal experiences with childhood cancer, Michael and Cindy Bish formed the Sam Bish Foundation in memory of their son, Sam, who, at age nine, lost his battle with osteosarcoma pediatric cancer. He bravely fought for 375 days, passing away on August 20, 2010. He was a strong little boy, enduring not only a year of chemotherapy, but also a leg amputation and three lung surgeries.

Michael and Cindy, after experiencing the grief no parent should have to cope with, put their energies toward making it a little easier for other parents facing a similar journey. The Sam Bish Foundation was created in order to “Provide, Hope, Support and Smiles to families faced with a pediatric cancer diagnosis.” Through their initiative, not only emotional support, but financial assistance is offered to help with the many costly aspects encountered by families with children who are fighting for their lives. It can include help with rent or mortgage payments; car payments; automotive and/or home repair, gift cards, meals and care packages. Proceeds also help with efforts to raise awareness and provide funding to pediatric cancer research.

To raise monies for the Bish’s ongoing mission, the annual “Bish Bash” was recently held on August 20, 2016. The Bish Bash is an annual pediatric cancer event in support of the Sam Bish Foundation. It is a “carnival style” family event open to the community which brings about awareness for pediatric cancer while providing a fun atmosphere for families. The yearly event includes magic shows, games, bounce houses, face painting, a Columbus Zoo program, character appearances and more!
