This year kitchens and bathrooms are combining comfort and function. American farmhouse is still the style a lot of people want to come home to, but it’s a little sleeker, a little more task oriented, with cozy warmth retained through attention to rustic detail. We’ve put together our predictions for which home design trends will reach the top this year. Check out the 2018 Kitchen & Bath Design Trends and see for yourself!
We can almost guarantee you’ve seen terrazzo finishes before, but you may not know it by name. According to Dwell, “Terrazzo, which is Italian for terrace, is the name it was given by the Italians who developed it. It’s a composite material made of chips of marble, quartz, granite, glass, or other stone, and is held together with a concrete or epoxy-resin binder. A weighted roller finishes the material, and the terrazzo is ground and polished to produce a smooth surface.” In the past terrazzo was typically relegated to budget friendly flooring. However in 2018 terrazzo has made its way to high end countertops. A little terrazzo goes a long way, but we love how this randomly patterned finish gives any space an eclectic edge.

We can sum up farmhouse style in 2018 as this: overdone rustic out, modern in. Modern farmhouse style has taken the rough out of rustic by combining warm farmhouse appeal with streamlined contemporary lines, forming a fresh take on country inspired design. This casual of-the-moment take on classic farmhouse style focuses on a refreshing blend of wood finished furniture, mixed metals, exposed wood beams, open shelving, and an energizing pop of pastels.

The key to a cozy and thoughtfully styled bathroom is layering. Layering of color, fabrics, and materials provides depth and interest in any space. Part of creating a warm and inviting bathroom is to add stand-alone elements like a woven basket or a wooden stool beside a freestanding bathtub. In addition to built-ins, a chest or wardrobe that serves as a linen closet also makes a bathroom feel less cold, all while providing additional storage for towels and other items.

This year concrete is making a major kitchen impact. Concrete countertops, dining tables, and kitchen accessories are all the rage. Country Living states, “Installing concrete counters is a sure way to infuse your home with a rustic yet industrial feel that’s at once trendy and unfussy.” But before you commit to a concrete overhaul, do your research. Concrete can be surprisingly high maintenance.

Blue is the new gray? This may come as a little bit of surprise being that blue has traditionally been considered as an unappetizing color in eating and food prep spaces. But, rules were meant to be broken, right? And now blue in all shades from pastels to the very on-trend navy are taking over the cabinetry scene. Blue provides distinction to neutral kitchens with a touch of bold sophistication. With literally hundreds of shades to choose from, there is a blue for everyone.

Matte black fixtures are a sleek choice for any style space. The home interiors industry responded to the rising popularity of this new finish and started adapting their product offerings in 2017 to meet the matte black movement. While some homeowners prefer the high-gloss luster of shiny countertops, tile, and lighting fixtures, others prefer the soft, flat appeal of matte countertops, appliances, and kitchen accents. After years of all white spaces being the rage, incorporating a grounding touch of matte black not only freshens the look, it also adds a touch of drama.
